On a bright but chilly Sunday afternoon in Essex, Buckhurst Hill hosted an unknown quantity from the neighbouring county, St Ives FC.

After a slow and hesitant start by Buckhurst Hill, St. Ives’ Byworth fired in a smart volley from a quality Cottle-Wood’s corner to give the hosts the lead. Despite the teams’ best efforts, however, the tempo failed to reach the level of their recent performances. To add to the hosts’ woes, The Stags had a player sin-binned for dissent by the referee, leaving us down to ten men.

In a further twist, shortly after, a red card was issued to a St. Ives forward player for an incident with Whetton, the BHFC goalkeeper. This reduced St. Ives to ten players.

In the second half, Buckhurst Hill began to make the most of their numerical advantage, taking control of the game and putting together some possession-based build-up play. This eventually culminated in a clever flick from Newton to Ford, who managed to poke it over the oncoming keeper to make it 2-0.

With the game looking to stay flat, Lamb showed great precision and technique from distance with two strikes – one to the keeper’s left, and one to his right – as a refreshing reminder of the quality present on the pitch.

Ultimately, the hosts ran out 4-0 victors and are now through to their second quarter-final in the space of a week, before resuming league action next week.
