Athletic Newham 1 – 0 Buckhurst Hill FC

Report by Anthony Mercer

A 72nd-minute penalty from Richard Kone handed Athletic Newham the points in what was a scrappy contest against Buckhurst Hill on a cold afternoon in East London.

Hosts Athletic Newham sat in ninth spot in the division and visitors Buckhurst Hill 14th.

Chances were at a premium in the first half, with Kone hitting over on 5, before a Jake Moss free kick just over a few minutes later. The best chance of the half fell to Nathan Sollosi whose header was blocked on the line from a corner just before the break.

Just after the break, Seidi saw his rasping effort saved by Emmanuel Olajide making his first start of the season in goal.

The game became a scrappy contest, settled in the 72nd minute when Jake Moss brought Jailson Seidi down inside the box as he attempted to burst through on goal. Richard Kone stepped up to dispatch the spot kick and hand the hosts a fourth straight league win, whereas for Buckhurst Hill it’s now nine games without a win and another frustrating afternoon and sees them drop a place to 15th.
Late in the game, Buckhurst Hill had 2 very good shouts for a penalty in the space of a minute, with Ollie Williams bundled over, looking a certain penalty, but the referee saw no trip.

After the game, Manager Mark Williams commented “It was an even game in which I felt we had the better of the 1st half and them the 2nd.
A draw would have been a fair result. Worse pitch in the league which is dangerous to play on. Yet again officiating cost us at least one penalty, which has become a regular occurrence recently”
