Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy | Tuesday 14 March 2023 | Attendance 67

Romford FC 5 – 1 Buckhurst Hill FC

Report by Anthony Mercer

Buckhurst Hill exited the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy with a heavy quarter final defeat to Romford on a cold and wet evening in East London.
Romford made a great start, going in front inside 5 minutes when a Kris Newby corner found Scott Doe whose header found the net. On 10 Sam Sollosi went close, before Finlay Dorell went close for the home side. A minute later it was 2-0 when Dorell cut in from the left and unchallenged hit past Olajide.

Buckhurst Hill did have a good spell, with Sam Sollosi hitting a shot just wide, before Nathan Sollosi and Sonny Shilling going close.

On 33 Romford’s George Cox went close with a volley. The game was out of sight on 44 when Finlay Dorrell scored again when a long ball out of defence was picked up and he chipped Olajide from the edge of the area into an empty net.

Buckhurst Hill did come out stronger after the break and pulled a goal back inside 4 minutes when Nathan Sollosi chased a lost ball down the right, pulled the ball back from the goal line for Sam Sollosi to crash home.

It was Buckhurst Hill who were the side most likely to score with a good period of play. Both Jonah Gregory and Nathan Sollosi had good efforts. On 57 Ezekiel Bademosi saw his goal bound shot deflected wide.

Despite the good period of play, Romford struck again on 76 when Charlie Morris chased down a throw-in that was going back to Olajide who, from an acute angle, scored into an empty net. Two minutes later Scott Doe bagged his second of the evening, when he had all the time in the world to meet Kris Newby’s corner with a free header to make it 5-1.

That was the last chance of the evening, with Romford progressing and Buckhurst Hill suffering another defeat.

On Saturday, Buckhurst Hill return to the same venue when they play Barking in the league.
After the game, Manager Mark Williams commented “We gave away simple goals during the evening. I was pleased with our early second half performance and could of made a game of it”
