Buckhurst Hill for the third time this season, beat in-form Saffron Walden, with the all-important goal coming from captain Danny Smith with a contender for goal of the season.

It was a bright start by the home side in an open game. The visitors had the first effort on goal when Ryan Melaugh hit just wide. Alfie Karby had to be at his best to deny striker Jason Hallett on 17′ when he blocked a certain goal. Despite Saffron Walden having the better of the chances, Sam Sollosi on 26′ found Nathan Sollosi who fired into the roof of the net. Seconds later the same player hit just wide.

Buckhurst Hill went further in front on 41′ when a Harry Markatis corner found centre half and captain Danny Smith, who struck home on the volley for a fine goal.

Straight after the break, Saffron Walden were denied by a super save from Adi Connolly when Melaugh saw his effort tipped wide. Saffron Walden grew into the game and despite a Sam Sollosi header going wide, it was the visitors who scored on 56′ when a ball from the right was not cleared and found its way to striker Hallett to hit home. Saffron Walden and Buckhurst Hill continued to push hard for the next goal, but good defending kept the score at 2-1.

Late in the game, Ezekiel Bademosi and Nathan Sollosi had efforts to confirm the points, with shots going wide, before both Alfie Harris and Danny Smith denied the late onslaught from Saffron Walden.

This was Buckhurst Hills’ second win of the year, with the last against the same opponents in January.
After the game, a delighted Manager Mark Williams commented “Best we’ve played in 2023. A great team performance. We could have made the game safe a few times early in the second half. Let them back in, but defended superbly to see the game out. Great team goal by Nathan to open the scoring followed by a cracker from Smudger. He won’t let us forget that one in a hurry”

Buckhurst Hill are on the road next Saturday when they travel to White Ensign.
