Buckhurst Hill 0 – 1 Stanway Rovers

Report by Anthony Mercer

A late Stanway Rovers goal was the difference between the sides on a wet and windy night at Myrak Park.

Manager Mark Williams made 4 changes to his side and it was Buckhurst Hill who started brightly. On 7′ a Danny Smith free kick was met by James Deaney, who saw his header go wide. Good build-up play on 10′ saw Nathan Sollosi shoot at the keeper.

Stanway had a great chance on 19′ when Max Sherlock flicked over from 5 yards. A good period for the home side saw Danny Smith hit wide from a Bradley Rowland cross as Buckhurst Hill pushed forward with wind and driving rain coming down.

Stanway had a good chance on 35′ when Joe Debell hit just over the bar.
James Deaney saw his rasping shot on 49′ well saved, as Stanway grew into the game. Stanway Rovers did have some good pressure, seeing them strike the post and bar in a short space of time.

The all-important goal came with 10 minutes remaining. Buckhurst Hill did not clear danger and the ball came into Debell who turned well in the box before smashing home past Connolly. James Christell had a good chance, 4 minutes later to secure the points, but hit wide.
The last action of the night, fell to goal scorer Debell who was denied by a fine Connolly save.

After the game, a disappointed manager Mark Williams commented “First half we created some good chances. On a tough night and a heavy pitch, we overplayed at the back, which has been our biggest problem and we do it too often. The second half was played in awful conditions and we needed to get the ball forward quicker. We didn’t do this and created little. Not working hard enough off the ball cost us the goal. We lacked quality in the final third and it was a disappointing night overall”
