Buckhurst Hill exited the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy, following a disappointing first half performance, against an organised Great Wakering side. Manager Mark Williams made a number of changes to his side, following last week’s fine result away to Barking.

All the goals came inside the first 13 minutes, with the home side taking the lead after 2 minutes when Tacine crossed from the left, finding Emmanuel Frempong to head home.
Great Wakering Rovers pulled level on 7 when the home defence did not clear the danger and the ball fell to Harry Talbot who stabbed home. This came just after Harry Brown picked up on another mistake in the home defence, when he should have scored. On 13 the visitors took the lead, when again the ball was not cleared and the ball fell to James White on the edge  of the area who smashed home.
Great Wakering dominated until half time, but could not capitalise on Buckhurst Hill, when they were down to 10 men due to a sin bin.

Buckhurst Hill did come out after the break a stronger side and following a triple substitution just before the hour, started to come into the game. One of the substitutes Lucas Willison fired just over after a Robertson cross, before striker George Thompson fired across goal. The returning Tyler Dolan started to cause issues in the visitors defence, playing in Robertson who saw his effort well saved by Martin. With Great Wakering down to 10 men due to a sin bin, Buckhust Hill pushed hard for an equaliser and Dolan saw a long range effort strike the bar, before deep into injury time, the same player saw his free kick saved and the Jonah Gregory follow up, saw Martin save again and help his side progress into the next round. After the game Manager Mark Williams commented on the game “After taking an early lead, we then gifted Great Wakering two goals, from not clearing the ball on set pieces.

We know we have to be better at this. In the 2nd half though, in the last 30 minutes we played some great football and had numerous chances to score.Yet again the introduction of Lucas Willison and Alfie Paddington was the key. Two 17 year olds, with a bright future.
