Gone with the Wind

Tuesday 24th March, 2026 | Soul Tower Hamlets 1-0 Buckhurst Hill | Essex Senior League Premier | Attendance : 87

By Harry Biggs

Mark Williams Buckhurst Hill side dropped all 3 points for just the second time since October 25’ after a game against fellow play-off side Soul Tower Hamlets was decided by wind gusts that nearly blew supporters off of their seats for the enthralling encounter at Roding Lane with Buckhurst Hill taking on home club duties for this game.

The gaffer made just one change to their side that came out victorious against Halstead Town last time out with Tony Martin dropping to the bench and was replaced by the returning Harry Lusher, who was unavailable on Saturday afternoon.

Onto the action now of a game that saw very few chances with both teams struggling to keep the ball with the wind playing a main factor in the outcome of the game.

The Stags earnt their first proper chance of the game just after the 20th minute mark when Harry Lusher saw his shot saved by the keeper of Soul Tower.

Harvey Brown took on an audacious effort just 4 minutes later when a free kick from inside our own half was sent all the way towards goal by Brown as the wind carried the ball through the air, nearly ending up in the net but the ‘visitors’ keeper was able to hold onto the airborne ball.

Onto the second half now, which saw the visitors have a few chances at goal with the wind now in their favour.

A shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Liam Foster as Soul looked for an opener a few minutes after the interval.

Despite the wind not in their favour, The Stags still dominated the ball as they did in their cup game against Soul Tower Hamlets in which they came out victorious but this time, things would change. The ‘visitors’ took the lead with 12 minutes of normal time left to play when Steven Carvell struck a brilliant dead ball under the wall to give Soul the advantage.

Added time brought the best chances of the game for The Stags which they were unfortunately unable to put away. The first saw Tony Martin put an effort over the bar from the edge of the area before a last gasp chance for substitute Yannis Mengou to net his first goal for the club was blocked in front of goal with Soul able to see out the game and grab all 3 points.
